Russel Braga is a contemporary composer, guitarist, and educator. He enjoys writing evocative music of the Yucatán Península where he was born. His concert music blends traditional and modern elements of classical music with various elements of Yucatecan peasant music.
Russel Braga received his B. A. in Music in 2011, from Southern Methodist University, in Dallas, Texas. At SMU he studied composition with Robert J. Frank, orchestration with Xi Wang, and classical guitar with Robert Guthrie. Braga also received a second major in Spanish from the SMU Dedman College of Humanities & Sciences, where he studied Latin American poetry with Francisco Morán and translation with George Henson. In addition, Braga received a Philip H. Solomon Award in Foreign Languages and Literatures: Spanish–2011, and a Meadows Exploration Award: Music–2010. At SMU, Braga also participated in a joint collaboration of dance, poetry, and music.
Braga continues his musical development through composing original music for an expanding circle of musical friends. Collaborating with artists from other art disciplines has also become a constant goal for the composer. In his leisure time, Braga takes pleasure in writing poetry, doing research, and painting. He also sings tenor with the Adult Choir at St. Monica Catholic Church in Dallas, Texas, where he currently lives with his family.
